Some impressions of the EL34 MonoBlocks (IE version)
As for the sound of the monoblocks, a few quick impressions:
- the amps sound more powerful, much more powerful indeed, into my 8 ohm 85 dB monitors than your 40 W rating would suggest, I wouldn’t hesitate recommending them to any ANK customer who has a doubt about whether they’ll provide enough drive for medium efficiency loudspeakers in the mid-80 dB range
- bass performance is a major surprise, the usual knock against tube amplification is lack of bass control and definition, simply not true at all with your EL34 monoblocks, the work ANK has invested in the triple c-core output transformers has paid off beautifully
- transparency, another major surprise, too many manufacturers right now are trying for a retro sound, but I don’t hear that at all in the monoblocks which are to my ears voiced for the 21st century with a thoroughly modern see-through quality I wanted in tube amplification, bravo for not succumbing to the 50-60’s throwback trend
- high end sweetness, my biggest complaint with the current crop of SS amplifiers, your monoblocks beat the pants off my Krell S275 – and that’s saying something.
